Why I see money differently after moving to Japan

I see money like an important tool for life. It can help you accomplish things that are necessary, help you aquire goods or services that add value to your life, or allow you to pay for something you need. I have always envisioned my finances in this way, but here are some new perspectives I hold after moving to Japan:

  1. Communication is just as valuable as currency. As I learn Japanese, I can see it's value in creating connections with others. My ability to ask questions, do business, and even apply for opportunities is vastly expanded by with your ability to conversate with others. One of the things I plan to invest in moving forward is learning Japanese, because I see it as I long term asset.

  2. Its not just how much you have, it's also what you do with it. My income has fluctuated by moving overseas. The decision to move has lead me to look at my budget more closely and ask myself, do I need more or do I need to better manage what I have. If you ask me the answer is both. Yes I have long term goals I am striving for, but if I manage what I do have to the best of my ability I may be better able to reach those goals. I started applying that strategy and already I feel more optimistic.

  3. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Moving has been a very unique experience even saving and planning did not prevent me from encountering new situations. I found that the number one way to navigate these moments is a asking questions for literally anything I don't understand. If it doesn't make sense, but has an impact on my finances, I am trying my best to ask questions. I really believe that will make a positive difference long term.

  4. Saving may be challenging but sometimes it is a lifesaver. One very important element of moving to Japan was bringing my pets. I reasesched and planed but I also saved money. I am extremely glad I did, and in hindsight I would have saved even more. It made a world of difference in my ability to move with peace of mind.

  5. Share and show gratitude.

I have learned that if you start and end everything with gratitude you all obstacles seem more attainable. Looking at your present reality with a thankful mentally can help you see the good in what you do have.
